Coping with Big Feet in China

My feet are size 13. I have big feet. But, that’s in the States.

In China, my feet are gigantic.

Last weekend, I went shopping for some house slippers, because in China you don’t wear shoes around the house…you take them off at the door. It’s great, because the floors are kept cleaner. But you need slippers because all apartments are basically concrete boxes which suck the heat from your feet, turning them into slightly pink icicles.

One day, having put shoes on my two icicle stubs for the last time, I decided I’d better try and find some slippers. I went to our local store and tried on the biggest slipper I could find, which was approximately a size 9, to the laughter of about five store employees being entertained by the big-foot foreigner.

No one could find anything larger. The same thing happened in several other stores. I was getting tired the search. Finally, the creative side of me kicked in.

I went back to the first store and bought the size 9 slippers for about USD $1.50. I went home, got my trusty Leatherman knife, and cut a slit in the front of each of the slippers.

In went my feet. Out popped my toes. And I had my slippers!

Note: the socks can get a bit dirty without the slippers.
