Welcome to Schäfer’s Room

Welcome to Schäfer’s room! I’ve been in search of the perfect play rug, but it’s taking me forever to find. So I’m going to go ahead and post these photos of his room. I know most people get the nursery ready before the baby comes, but since we didn’t know if our baby was a boy or girl, we waited until after Schäfer’s grand debut. I’m still pleased we waited to find out – even if the nursery was a work-in-progress for a while. Schäfer never complained!
For the record, most of our Chinese friends think it is very strange that Schäfer has his own room. We explained that Schäfer was in our room until he was about three months old, but now he sleeps very well in his own bed and he does not get hungry during the night. They co-sleep until about 1st grade. Dr. Sears would love all the attached parenting going on in China!

Schäfer loves to look at his kites . The dragonfly is over his bed like a mobile. Both sway if the window is open. The cushions on the rocker and curtains were made by our local tailor. The colored mats are in lieu of a rug.

This is the fabric for the window curtains and crib skirt. The bumper pads and rocker are in a solid blue. This was one of the only fabrics without pink in it.

All of the pieces in the room were made by our local tailor. Since most Chinese don’t use cribs, this project was a bit different, but as always our tailor was up for the task. I sketched everything we wanted complete with measurements. Then, we talked (in Chinese) about each piece and clarified how it would work with the crib, hang in the window, sit in the rocker, etc. She couldn’t give us a price because she didn’t know how much fabric she would use. We completely trust her and her craftsmanship. I loved picking up each item as it was ready. She’s say, “Oh, this was 73.4rmb.” I love how she gives us the exact price based off the amount of fabric used.

This crib breaks down into a child’s bed.

We’re using the top of the dresser for a changing table and it works perfectly. The height is just so that we can stand close and still change the diaper. Our supplies are in the top drawer for easy access. Sometimes Schäfer checks out the owl hanging above him, but mostly he looks at us and smiles.

I really like his room. I think I made mine too babyish for Elam and then felt like I had to redo it at 18 months when he seemed like a “big boy”. That room will definitely grow with Shafer.

  • I love it! Schafer seems to love it, too.

I love his room. The kites are so neat and great idea for him to look at. As I was reading and you said he slept in your room until he was 3 months…I had to stop because I can’t believe he is past 3 months. It seems like we just go the email he was born about a month ago. Time flies…enjoy every moment.

This all looks really really neat!!! The kites are wonderful in there! And your bedding turned out great, too! I wish Alexee could come over for a play date. :)

absolutely loving the room! like the idea of the hanging bugs! ;)

gotta tell ya, you’ve convicted me – gotta get de-cluttered!!! can that be my 2007/2008 goal!?! ha!

  • Schafer has a room to grow in…those tall ceilings are great for the beautiful kites. Love what you did with the crib, I did the same for your baby bed with white back in the day.xoxoxoxoxoiluvumom
