Peter’s Tex Mex is a hot destination for any expat visiting Beijing – well, any expat who lives in another part of China that is. The story unfolds that a 16-year-old young Chinese man, later named “Peter”, traveled from the countryside to Chengdu, a large city in southwest China, in search of work when Grandma of Grandma’s Kitchen befriended him. Using hand gestures, she taught Peter how to make Tex Mex. She looked after Peter and helped pay his school tuition. He called her, “Mom”. Eventually, Peter opened his own restaurant: Peter’s Tex Mex right next door to Grandma’s Kitchen. From that location, he launched another in Chengdu and now boasts 2 in Beijing.

Here we are at the newest location in the Lidu area of Beijing.

We felt like we were in Texas! We devoured the 9 layer burrito, a taco salad and a peanut-butter chocolate shake. Amazing! But it still made us long for the Taqueria San Jose in downtown San Rafael.

The children’s play area was especially convenient.

I love this photo because it shows Schäfer doing one of his “classics” – carrying a panda in his mouth while he plays with another toy. Multi-tasking already!

After Peter’s Tex Mex, we did some shopping. Here Schäfer plays with the shopkeepers’ children.
