It seems that Schäfer is bound and determined to keep walking so we had buy him the ultimate walking accessory: shoes.

Schäfer was pretty excited about the new freedom that came with owning shoes.

He enjoyed looking down and watching his shoes. I guess it was quite the sensation since just a few days before he was barefoot at the beach.

Hey Sandra-
I laughed out loud when I read your comment on shoes with characters! Finally, someone else who is annoyed by this fashion statement. I am always complaining about finding shoes and shirts that are just plain! Why do they all have to have a cartoon, car, truck, dinosaur, etc? It seems to me it should be cheaper just to have a solid color, but what do I know!
I love reading about you guys’ adventures. It sounds like you are doing well and your little guy is so precious. Isn’t it so much fun to watch them learn about their world around them? Landon is almost 2 and a half and we had a new addition on Jan 3 when Carson, our second little boy joined the Butler family. I am enjoying my time off from work and getting to know this new little guy.
Take care and keep the great posts comeing!
Ok… I am not laughing at Schäfer but at the whole shoe situation… he is looking like a model strutting those shoes… hehe
What cool little boy shoes!!!! No worries–you’re right, they’ll be too dirty in a matter of a few days to care what character is printed on them.
Caroline – Thank you for letting me know that plain clothes/shoes are not available in America either. I was beginning to wonder if this was a China thing, but now I realize it’s a world wide phenomenon: to decorate our children. (or really to use our children as living billboards for their product – ok that’s getting extreme, but it’s in my head too)
Welcome Carson! I bet you have your hands full right now. Got sleep? I’m thinking definitely a no on that one. Hang in there. As you already know, they grow up too fast.
I remember the forlorn look when I bought the next size shoe for Elam (when we lived in Dallas) and showed it to him after school. He was nearly 6 at the time and wanted to know why his feet were too big to fit into Spiderman or Darth Vader shoes. It was completely devestating to him. I can’t say that I was that disappointed. England is totally different…not so many characters on the shoes (shirts and stuff still have loads of them though).
I say embrace them…seriously, how many kids will be able to say their first ‘baby shoes’ had ‘yekcim’ on them. I think it’s hilarious! And Schafer definitely pulls off the ‘I’m totally cute despite the Chinglish on my shoes’ look.
Okay, so I had to scroll down and comment because I was out trying to get some shoes for Joshua yesterday. We are not in a position to buy $25-$40 tennies for a 3 year old. (Not sure I would do it even if we could!!) Anyway, so I was at WalMart and lo and behold, all they had were black or gray tennies with spiderman, cars (not so bad but with fake wheels on the side?) or Thomas the train. I just wanted a plain old pair of white tennies that would go with ALL of his little spring and summer clothes. Well, then I turned around and there was the perfect pair! Totally white, washable leather and $8.98!!! The draw back, they were in the girls section. The only way you can tell is if you take off the shoes and see the red polka dots on the inside!! WEll, I have to say, I bought them! is that bad? HAHAHA
Marianne – it is not bad. & at this point, he’s still too young for therapy. $8.98! Good golly. How could you stop at one pair?
this is so funny to me. the backwards mickey, what in the world? I love your posts, they are so interesting. the Chinglish are my absolute fav!
