This year, Dragon Boat Festival ??? was a special three day holiday.
Unfortunately, there were no Dragon Boat races. After calling around, we learned that Yichang host the races every other year. Now we know why we missed the races in 2006! (I seriously thought it was one of those weirdo pregnancy days so we stayed at home.)

Races or not – the holiday rolled on. The traditional food to eat is zongzi which are large sticky rice wraps with a delicious treat inside – usually beans or meat.

At the local shopping mall, these ladies were showing their zongzi making techniques.

Step 2: Roll the leaf into a cone shape.

Step 4: Stop mid-way and add a secret bean treat.

Step 5: Tie the zongzi with string. Then, make some more!

Zongzi were readily available at many local street vendors.

Despite the heavy rain, we headed off to a friend’s house to enjoy one mighty fine meal.
Schäfer’s favorite foods were: tea eggs, salty boiled duck eggs, steamed corn on the cob and zongzi.
He feasted…and so did we. Happy Dragon Boating everyone!
