Once home, we had a simple lunch and Schäfer got a much needed nap. When he woke up, he had new toys!
This dancing frog was a gift from his local Chinese grandpa.

Space Man was given to him by an uncle. It’s awesomeness can not be described. It was found in a clothing store display window.

Check out this packaging. The Ha Ha Toy factory in Shanghai makes all sorts of vintage toys.

The label reads:
Attention: This is not a toy. For adult collectors only.
We love that our friend knew this was the perfect gift for Schäfer.

His Chinese grandpa gave him the dancing frog, the walking bird and the duck which lays an egg (we’ve tucked that away until later). The space man came from his uncle. We gave him the musical instruments.

We found these little clappers and maracas at our favorite toy store.

We played inside for a while to beat the heat, then we went outside and played in the dirt with big sister. Yes, this is big sister with a very trim summer cut.

Little brother wants to get down and play too!

After a while, we walked over to see the official opening game of the National Collegiate Soccer Tournament. Team spirit was high! ???????

Schäfer took his bird out for a walk.

He traded his bird to play with big sister’s Huan Huan hat. He’s wearing a new Jing Jing t-shirt we bought from one of the traveling vendors.

And then he cried when it was time to go home and do those boring things like eat supper, take a bath and rest your weary body.
What a great day: seeing the Olympic torch, celebrating children’s day, initiating a no bag policy and an official soccer tournament!

Wow! What a great day you had. Your photos of the torch relay are beautiful, and I’m so grateful you shared them. What a wonderful time to be in China. I love Shafer’s new toys, too. Space Man is very cool! My kids would be jealous, they would love a Children’s Day. (Which is every day, in reality!)
Sandra! All of your photos are incredible.
I love, particularly, the crowding around Schäfer while feeding the birds. So funny. I remember being in China with my blond haired, blue eyed friend and having people follow us around or stop and “enjoy” our conversation with us.
And that Robot toy is great. I might have to get my hands on one of those some time.
WOW! What a day – I’m just tired reading about it! What an exciting time and amazing opportunity.
Sandra – Great coverage of the Olympic Torch – and a day in the life of Schafer (which always bring a smile – especially dancing with the frog)! I love your blog – makes me feel like I’m almost back in China. We too experienced the Chinese paparazzi and I have it well documented!
How precious is that video, thanks for posting! I hope you guys enjoy your warm days!
