(On Friday, Hubs left for a weekend in Charleston with his brother while Schäfer and I visited with my sister.)
I never enjoy driving in flash floods.
Friday evening I hopped in the van and drove to Charleston, South Carolina, to visit with my little brother in the Coast Guard. Along the way I stopped off at Best Buy to rent a GPS navigation unit for a couple weeks. I was thankful I did.
A couple hours outside of Charleston it started to rain. The wind started to blow. Within a couple minutes it was raining sheets. My windshield wipers could barely keep up. A couple of times I was nearly blown off the road. For the next couple hours I drove twenty miles below the speed limit, passing a half dozen accidents along the way. Thankfully the little GPS unit told me where to turn when I could barely see the road.
Seven hours after I left North Carolina, I arrived in Charleston. My brother was flooded into his base and couldn’t get out, so I told the GPS to bring me to a recommended restaurant, Poogan’s Porch. I assumed it was going to be a little southern food dive down a back alley near where I was staying. Instead, I found myself at a fine dining establishment, wearing a polartec and bermuda shorts amidst suits and ties. Ah well!
Being alone, I was seated pretty quickly at one of the bar tables. They brought out some unbelievably tasty buttermilk biscuits and honey-butter. I could have made a meal of just the biscuits, but decided to try the Plantation Fried-chicken. A plate of succulent chicken filled with cheese and red peppers came…the plate soon left empty. Maybe they felt bad for me, but they sent me home with a box of the biscuits. Alas, I wish my wife were here to enjoy this bit of Charleston with me!

Did you happen to see Noah and his 2 x 2? Remember he didn’t have a GPS system, just faith. Love ya….Dianne
Good Times! I love driving in the rain… perhaps it’s because I live in the Bay Area and I’ve heard thunder three times in the six years I’ve been here, alas this Georgia girl must wait a while longer… – also, I’ve eaten at Poogen’s Porch! I worked in C-Town for a summer and that was the locale of our staff dinner, fun times – did they tell you ghost stories??
