Poogan’s Porch Buttermilk Biscuits

In October I stumbled into a nice little Charleston restaurant called Poogan’s Porch. That evening I was served the best buttermilk biscuits I have ever tasted, along with some honey-butter. I salivate.

So, being in a land where our motto is “if you can’t get ‘em, make ‘em”, I ran across a recipe for Poogan’s Porch buttermilk biscuits. Oh happy day!

Without further adieu…

  • 5 cups self-rising flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1/4 pound shortening
  • 2 cups buttermilk

Combine first 3 ingredients and mix well. Add shortening and mix with hands until shortening is broken up into quarter-sized pieces. Add buttermilk and mix until all is incorporated. Mix as little as possible! Or they will come out as heavy as hockey-pucks.

Bake at 350F until golden brown, about 10 to 15 minutes. Yes. These turned out like hockey-pucks. But they tasted fabulous. Will try again soon.
