Milk. It does a wallet good.

So, I went to the farm again this evening to get our usual load of fresh milk. Sandra encouraged me to write up the cost of such a trip compared with buying milk in store. Here’s how I reckon:

2009-03-05@20-58-34

One trip to the farm costs 140 rmb (40 for taxi round trip, 100 for 25 liters of milk) we get..

  • fresh yogurt (2 gallons) – 113.55 rmb
  • cheese (2 pounds) – 140 rmb
  • butter (2 sticks) – 23 rmb
  • fresh milk to drink (10 liters) – 73.95 rmb
  • buttermilk (2 quarts) – priceless (you can’t buy it in China)

Totaling 350.5 rmb of dairy products from the trip.

$20.49 vs. $51.30

Bonus: this time around I bought some large free-range chicken eggs at a discounted price.

I think it’s worth an hour of my time every couple weeks, eh?

Bonus: I always meet someone new each time I hop in a taxi to go out to the dairy.
