This week: Friday

This morning, I heard great progress in Schäfer’s language.

Ayi: Zhe shi Tian Ju de weizi.
Tian Ju: Bu shi mama de weizi. Ayi de wiezi zai zher.
Mama: Mama de weizi ai nali?
Tian Ju: mama de weizi zai zher.
Mama: Baba de weizi zai nali?
Tianju: Baba de wiezi zai zher.

Ayi: This is Tian Ju’s chair.
He: Not Mommy’s chair. Ayi’s chair is here.
Me: Where’s Mommy’s chair?
He: Mommy’s chair is here. (pointing)
Me: Where’s Papa’s chair?
He: Papa’s chair is here. (pointing)

Despite the fact that earlier this morning he was so elated when his toys and Easter basket came out of time out – he had another hitting issue.

Today episode came when we were preparing to go outside and I asked him to put his coat on. For some reason, this caused a MELTDOWN.

There was flailing on the floor. Whining. Screaming. And finally, hitting Mommy. Which caused more flailing, screaming, crying, etc.

Why am I even telling you this? You probably heard it, but just didn’t realize it was coming all the way from China!

All the while, our helper was trying to…I’m not sure what she was trying to do except get him to be his happy self again.

Once again:
no Easter treats. no treats of any kind. tractor, trailer, digger and hot rod are all in time out. Additional discipline also applied.

So far, at this point (things will change – they always do) I’m finding that it’s taking multiple things to reinforce discipline. If he gets spanks, then it seems like he quickly forgets. But an hour or so later, when he goes to look for his digger, I can show him that his digger is in time out and I can ask him why. Or when he wants a treat after nap time, I can again say no and ask him why.

I have put Raffe in time out once. I’d do it again if I thought it was effective.

Once Schäfer collected himself and apologized, we headed to the Lotus Pond where a gang of friends were ready to play.

Today Schäfer particularly enjoyed riding on Di Di’s push scooter.

He currently has three scabs on his face. The nose and chin are from “flying” off the bicycle. The cheek is from his run in with the prong. He’s been paying his “owies” a lot of attention.

But those “owies” aren’t slowing him down!

Tonight, Hubs and I met up for a date night. I KNOW!

I worried about how Schäfer would take the news. I said, “Schäfer, Mommy is going on a date with Papa. We’ll be back.” He replied with a hearty, “Bye Mommy! Bye! THANK YOU!”

I’m not kidding. He thanked his parents for going on a date.

Hubs was already in town, so I took the bus and 40 minutes later we met up. It took a while because of the rain.

We ended up at a new Japanese restaurant. The wasabi was incredibly hot. The food was just ok. The atmosphere was lacking. It felt like we were eating in an unfurnished office cubicle.

I love sushi and Udon noodles. You?

After our supper, we decided to try “Greenery Cafe” for dessert. It looked nice from the outside.

2009-04-17@19-39-33
It took all I had not to order this chocolate wafer house for dessert! Hubs said, “You’d just order it for the photo. You don’t really want to eat a chocolate wafer.” And he was right. Next time!

We ended up splitting the mango smoothie. The hand made coconut ice cream was actually very creamy and rich. It was YUM! Surprisingly so!

2009-04-17@19-52-30
The theme for “Greenery Cafe” is cruise ship. There are anchors and nets everywhere. Even as we took this photo, Kenny G was playing “My Heart Will Go On”. I’m not kidding. I can’t make this stuff up.

Unfortunately, we can’t really hang out in a restaurant for a long time because eventually the cigarette smoke burns my eyes. (There’s generally no distinction between smoking and non-smoking sections.)

So we were trying to figure out what we would do next. It was still raining cats and dogs so we couldn’t go for a walk. We’d normally rent a movie, but we’re kind of on this 3 month no TV hiatus.

Hubs asked if I wanted to see the new KTV (karaoke) studio just one floor up. OK!

2009-04-17@20-25-39
The KTV space was brand new with free internet in the lounge and a Jetson-like snack bar. And with nothing else to do, we rented ourselves a little space for one hour.

I knew we’d have a good time when I saw the tambourine.

Truth: After an hour, we didn’t want to leave! We were laughing so hard.

Here’s four minutes and seven seconds of nonsense:

    Hi friend,
Wow, what a busy week! Hang in there with Schafer, you are doing a great job. I think it’s really smart to look for what is motivating him and use that as appropriate discipline. It will take consistency and faithfulness over the long haul, as we are finding with our girls. Now Clara Anne is at the age where she can manipulate the situation–outwardly obey but in her heart have a bad attitude. It’s harder to address the heart issues, I’m finding, but also very rewarding to see her grasp truth and let it influence her.

Hang in there with the powder dust as well! You all have had quite the zhuangxiu adventures this year! Hope they can finish quickly (and have it truly fixed!) and maybe your ayi can even do the clean up while you travel next week!

    Blessings to you all,
    Rachel

PS, and what a fun date! So glad you had a great time!!! Thanks for the video!

  • I like sushi. I like udon noodles. But do you know what I like even more? Seeing a picture of how beautiful you looked for your date! That color is great on you!

  • Tim McIlveene

How fun!! It totally cracks me up that Schafer was thanking you all to go on a date – I guess he needed a break too!

yay shafer!!! I love watching emma’s chinese get better and better. She exclaimed to me the other day that hers was better than mine. Yeah, right… =)

My only advice with discipline is just hang in there and be consistent. I’ve had such struggles in this area, but know that if I’m faithful to be consistent with them and lay out truths, it’s so worth it in the end. It only takes a walk at the nearby park to remind me some of the many reasons why we want to shepherd their hearts… =)
