Dragon Boat Festival 2009

Duan Wu Jie (端午节) or Dragon Boat Festival is one of China’s oldest festivals dating back 2300 years.

Qu Yuan was a patriotic poet (340 BC-278 BC or 343-290 B.C.) who threw himself in the Mi Luo river in Hunan. Legend has it that people went out in boats and threw sticky rice cakes wrapped in leaves into the river in order to keep fish and evil spirits away from his body.

Local dragon boat races are held every other year in Yichang or nearby Zigui.

I don’t know if it was the non-stop rain or the newly potty trained toddler, but we opted to stay nearby to make dumplings and eat zongzi with friends.

Right now, everyone has this plant outside their door because it helps fend off mosquitoes. Good idea.

Schäfer helped make 2 dumplings. Then, he wanted to eat them. “No! Don’t cook it! Just eat it!” is a phrase we hear at least 3 times a day.

YeYe gave Schäfer this electric train. Oh my goodness. There was joy.

Dragon Boat Festival goodness! Zongzi and dumplings!

After 589 dumplings, Schäfer gobbled down a red bean zongzi.

Schäfer and Ge Ge zoomed “Thomas” around and around his track until his batteries died he took an afternoon nap.

Speaking of a nap, we headed home after lunch so Schäfer could get in his good 2 hours. Hubs squeezed in a nap himself.

Once well rested, Hubs went out to tackle his Honey-Do list. I don’t normally have such a big list of things to be done around the house, but my Spring Cleaning Endeavor has brought a lot of broken items to my attention.

2 broken hinges
wood glue on broken chairs
plastic lining on shelves
replace the light in the kitchen
glue schäfer’s bed
fix schäfer’s chest-of-drawers
replace schäfer’s door knob

Hubs is still working on finishing up the list, but the hardest part is done: going supply shop to supply shop looking for each item.
