Several weeks ago Sandra’s friend introduced her to a local spot serving a provincial specialty: re gan mian 热干面 (‘hot dry noodles’). They are basically a noodle with a bunch of sesame paste and hot peppers on top. And they are quite tasty!

This particular spot on HuanChengNanLu is reportedly the oldest Re Gan Mian shop in the city, serving since 1973. They used to be located on Zhong Shan Lu, next to our Tang Bao restaurant, but they moved when the street was remodeled.

First, you’ll need to pay at the front desk.

Small or big Bowl: RMB2.5 or RMB3 ($0.37 or $0.44).

You will receive a green or red stick representing a small or large bowl respectively.

Toss the stick in the pot back by the kitchen.

They will whip up your re gan mian according to taste. I usually get it without the hot peppers since there’s enough residual hot peppers in the mixing bowl to spice it up a bit.

Vinegar? Pickled vegetables? Chives?

Hot pepper? Or just get the usual?

This is so incredibly good! A great start to my Saturday morning bike rides.

Another local specialty to be reviewed later: small noodles. I hear that you’re not supposed to drink the liquid because of the high alkali content. Sounds like an adventurous breakfast to me!

Located on HuanCheng Nan Lu (Not yet reflected on Google Maps.)

YUM! This blog always seems to leave me hungrier than when I started. :)

Three cheers for dirty noodles!!! (that’s what we called them)

  • I never tire of seeing ‘life’ in China… not the touristy side of it… but the real life… I find these type of places so interesting… though having said that… I don’t think that I would be eating hot noodles… I am not one for anything spicy hot… still, quiet an experience…
How much longer on your wait? What was your LID again? We now have about 12 days… wooo hooo…

    • Hey Fliss! Our LID is 12.29.07. They matched expedites through April 2007, but have done no expedited matching since April. Nobody knows why. So, I’d like to say we have 8 more months of waiting, but honestly since they haven’t matched anyone in 4 months, I don’t know how long we’ll have to wait. Hanging in there!
