One aspect of living in China that we really enjoy is how easy it is to recycle. There is no separating different bottles into different colored bins, driving an hour to a specialized recycling center in the next county over, and so on…
Here, many people make their living looking for recyclables. Not only that, they will come to your door to collect.

This lady came by to collect all the cardboard we had gathered during the move.

Then offered the the going rate: 3 mao per jin. (4 cents per pound)
As she looked into our apartment, she offered to buy our oven thinking it was a broken microwave. Errr… I think we’ll be keeping that.

I’ve learned so much from your experiences! “Humm…I think I’ll keep the oven and microwave”….I had to laugh. Then, I thought these items must be a rarity in China?
Aunt Joy
Hi Sandra & Shorel – I don’t know if you remember meeting me. I lived in Yidu from 2006 – 2008 with MB and Jen. Anyway, I started reading your blog a few months ago when Katie told me that you guys had adopted (you see, I’ve been dreaming of adopting a chinese girl for about 6 years now…). Anyway, I’ve enjoyed reading about your life in Yichang and sad to see you’ve moved away…. But, my real reason in commenting today is to say “please update your blog!” Those of us who work a 9 – 5 desk job who check for updates and there haven’t been any in a very long time are starting to go through withdrawals.
Thanks!
