Accidently Crashing Xin Hu Kindergarten's Play Day

06.05.10

About 8am this morning my phone rang. It was Yuan Yuan’s Mom calling to see if I wanted to have a play date. Since my sinuses were out of control, I declined. As soon as I hung up the phone, I looked at Schäfer and Sianna who were busy eating their oatmeal. They weren’t sick. They deserved a play date.

So I mustered my strength, called Yuan Yuan’s Mom back and asked what time she wanted to meet. She said we’d meet in 15 minutes at Yuan Yuan kindergarten. I thought this was a little strange since we live across the street from each other, but I went along with the plan. I did my best to get us all dressed and packed: diapers, wipes, snacks, a sippy cup and a boxed milk. I had no clue where we were going so I did my best to plan for anything.

When we arrived at Xin Hu Kindergarten, we were surprised to learn that this was an official Saturday Field Trip. I felt so bad. We totally crashed their school outing! I offered to pay, but the school insisted that Schäfer come and play with Yuan Yuan.

We went to Nan Hu Gong Yuan for some “mountain and rock climbing”.

Hubs called when he returned from his appointment. I told him where I was, but he had never heard of this park. It was one of those funny conversations: No, I don’t know what time I’ll be home. Well, I’m not really sure where I am. No, I don’t know the plans for the day. But we’re having a great time!

Schäfer had so much fun. He was running everywhere, climbing on all the rocks. Even though I could hardly breathe, I was so glad I called Yuan Yuan’s Mom back.

For quite some time, we’ve been wanting to change Schäfer’s preschool, but he’s refused to even consider a change. He loves his teachers and his classmates so much that he couldn’t imagine not being with them next fall. Today, all of that changed.

On the bus ride back to the school, Schäfer turned to me and said, “Mommy, I want to go to Yuan Yuan’s school.” He mentioned this to me several times to make sure I understood. His request was a huge answered prayer because I’ve known that we need to change schools, but I haven’t been wanting to force another transition. My next step is to attend an average day at Xin Hu so I can get a feeling for their teaching style.

Once we returned to the school, the kids played on the indoor playground.
