Relaxation and Rememberance

This morning, we woke up early in order to take 2 buses to get to church. We were visiting a church that was recommended by a friend. When Hubs asked if I wanted to go all the way to Kailua to attend church, I had to quote the famous Darrin Mechling, “A church alive is worth the drive!”

And so we were off.

Church went well. Schäfer was excited to go to Sunday School and make a craft. The teaching was incredible – so refreshing and inspiring.

We had packed and planned to stay in Kailua for the afternoon. We wanted to check out the beaches over there. Unfortunately, we had to change our plans when Schäfer began a meltdown at 11:50am. He was worn out. The best decision was for us to take the buses back to the guest house and let the kids get some rest.

The beach would have to wait.

So we went back to the guesthouse. Enjoyed a simple sandwich lunch. Allowed Schäfer to go “pickle fishing” after he finished most of his meal. Then, put the kids down.

They each slept for 3 hours.

I guess I was tired too because I fell asleep during Pride and Prejudice (Kiera Knightly version aka Condensed Cambell’s version).

Later that afternoon, we decided to take a walk to the National Memorial of the Pacific.

Unlike Arlington Cemetery, the gravestones here are inset into the ground.

It was quite overwhelming how many had given their lives for our freedom.

On either side of the stairs leading up to the chapel were the names of those who had died in the Pacific Ocean during WWII, the Korean War and from the Vietnam conflict.

Adjoining the chapel were huge mosaic maps of various battles in the Pacific.

The space allowed plenty of room for contemplation and remembrance.

Just when I thought I was looking at a patch of grass, I noticed the gravestones went on and on.

From the top of the cemetery, there is a viewpoint of Honolulu.

Once outside the cemetery, we stopped by a nearby park to blow some bubbles and let the kids run around.

Sianna enjoyed the bubbles and the grass.

We enjoyed a slow refreshing and relaxing Sunday.
That is a good day.

Looks like you had a great trip! Wish we could have gotten together again but house hunting was taking over our life. Do you remember which church you went to? We will be living in the Kaneohe/Kailua area and are looking for an ALIVE church!
