The iPhone (or any smartphone) can provide an instant learning distraction for kids. This is convenient when you’re unexpectedly stuck somewhere with nowhere to move or play such as when the bus breaks down or the train is taking longer than scheduled.

Here are a couple of the apps that Schäfer likes:

Letters A to Z from True Learning – Good for introducing letters. Includes phonic sounds.

Toddler Teasers Letters – Good for reviewing letters. Schäfer loves the sticker awards.

Toddler Teasers Shapes – Schäfer has all of his shapes nailed because of this app. He also loves their sticker award.

Giraffe’s PreSchool Playground – A fun way to learn the ABC’s. Includes phonic sounds. Entertaining for me as well.

Preschool Adventure – Good for matching, but he grew beyond this pretty quick.

Angry Birds Lite – He doesn’t really know how to play it, but Schäfer does enjoy flinging birds everywhere.

Do you have any recommendations for great kid apps?

  • R & A think Talking Tom is very funny (he imitates you in a funny voice), and they also play TicTacFree and Matching Zoo.

  • This is a wonderful – list – and overall great blog. Reading about your time in China is so much fun.
