Milk Tea Mania

You probably know by now that our family enjoys a good cup of milk tea. We also enjoy traveling.

So, how do we combine milk tea + traveling?

What is the Starbucks VIA of the milk tea world?

Well, it turns out that you can buy milk tea in portable packets.

Like this one. Lipton’s Hong Kong style milk tea. The problem is that it doesn’t taste so good. It is too sweet and has some sort of fruity aftertaste. Maybe the tannins? It’s better when made with milk (as opposed to hot water), but we don’t travel with a portable milk steamer…

We found Park N Shop’s Best Buy brand in Hong Kong. It’s actually passable, especially made with milk. (Once again, the milk steamer thing…)

Lipton recently released some “premium” milk teas. This Taiwanese-style was too sweet and somewhat fruity.

This Japanese-style (Ma Cha flavor) was too sweet and just a little odd.

We had big hopes for the British style, but once again is was too sweet.

Lipton also has Italian-style, but we started to get the hint… milk tea in a packet hasn’t come of its own yet. And probably never will unless the milk tea drinkers of the world unite to invest in an R&D department for 10 years of research that resulted in a good instant milk tea… with matching mugs to carry the satchels.

No, that probably won’t happen.

Ok, I’m going to brew a pot of fresh, homemade, Hong Kong style milk tea now.

Update (4/14/12): Jen was quite nice to pick up a box of Dai Pai Dong HK Milk tea when she was in HK. It’s taken the lead as far as instant milk tea. Really not bad. For instant, that is.
