Tour de China – Day 5

Location: Dengfeng, Henan, China (34.46308°N, 113.04591°E)

Mile: 398

The last 30 miles were probably the most strenuous. All of us were worn down. We climbed more than 200 meters in a short distance. At long last, we made it to Dengfeng.

Upon going into the city, we were met by representatives of the local bicycle club. One of them escorted us to the registration hall/hotel. It looked like the Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. or perhaps one of the museums in Vienna. Then I walked inside. Well, it’ll be a good meeting anyway and I’m sure they’ll have hot water in the showers (fingers crossed). It’s basically a convention center/hotel. Since the meeting doesn’t start for two more days (we rode quick), we’re staying at a $1.25 hotel across from the convention center. Can’t complain.

On our way to the registration center, we met bicycle clubs from different areas of the country: Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan…all of them retired. (I’m starting to think I’m going to be attending something akin to an AARP convention.)

I certainly can’t fault them for this…I rode into town on a 27 speed, light-weight aluminum frame, all the while drinking Gatorade and water from a Camelbak. The men and women from Shanghai and Guangzhou (more than twice the distance I rode) came in on $10 single speed bikes that they use to buy their vegetables from the morning market with. They got my respect.

(The two people in this photo are the oldest riders to attend the meeting, ages 87 and 82.)
