The Popcorn Cannon

On November 30th, on my way home from the university, I came upon a man using an old fashioned pressure cooker over an open fire. After a couple of minutes the man tilted the cooker off the fire, pointed it into a large canvas bag and flipped the lever releasing the lid. The pressure cooker exploded like a cannon, shooting a barrage of popcorn into the bag.

I went back home, grabbed Schäfer and headed back to watch. Needless to say, Schäfer and I were both mesmerized. We sat there for at least an hour watching explosion after explosion.

Here’s the video:

Popcorn Cannon from on Vimeo.

On Friday evening, the popcorn cannon was back. This time Sandra came out with the kids and we watched the spectacle together.

Recipe: Add salt, sugar and corn kernels (or rice, oats or any other form of dried kernel).

Cinch on the lid.

Put it on the fire. Keep spinning the pot so the ingredients don’t burn.

At a certain pressure, aim it into the canvas bag and pull the release. BOOM!!!

Popped rice aka Rice Krispies!

Only 7RMB per bag. ($1.07)

Dig in!

Sianna loves popped rice.

After a few rice krispies, we decided to go check out the new bubble tea shop that opened around the corner.

Schäfer ordered a coconut milk drink. Pretty tasty!

Sandra was happy to have her first bubble tea in a year.

Schäfer placed the rest of his drink in my water bottle holder.

Once the line dwindled down, we ordered a bag of puffed rice. Boom! Delicious!
